It is known that not all children learn to read and talk phonetically. Many children, often autistic people, learn to read whole words by memory and gestalt phrases to enable speech.

In an attempt to create a programme that suits my gestalt language processors and autistic learners, alongside their AAC and pictorial symbol understanding, I have created the Core Word Programme.

It is made up of nine weekly sessions, focusing on learning one to two core words per week.

Suitable for developmental/cognitive literacy ages 0-4 years, including non-speaking, minimally speaking, PMLD and AAC users

The sessions include;

• Opportunities to use AAC (printable core boards and symbols included)
• Makaton signing (printables, illustrations and videos included) -ASL coming as an update later on in the year
• Selection of songs linked to the core word of the week
• Watch their favourite shows and film clips that contain the core word
• Interactive games to help consolidate understanding for the core word
• Interactive writing and tracing games (also printable sheets)
• Play based ideas for each core word
• Ideas to practice in a small group setting
• Ideas to practice in a table task setting
• Reading books and Read-aloud videos for books relating to the core word
• Widgit, Symbolstix and Boardmaker versions available to match what your learners know
• Multiple versions of the programme available to match AAC apps such as TD snap, Widgit Go, Grid and Proloquo

The core words chosen align with the Dynamic Learning Map's 40 first core words. These are the first words that an AAC user would need most. *More theory and information can be found within the manual included in the programme.

*In future academic years, Core Word Programme year 2 will be introduced to include all recommended core words. As well as year 3+ which will begin to teach common fringe words.

In my class, this is replacing our phonics sessions. this programme can also work alongside phonics, to better enhance speech and real life use of words in the day to day. Many of the words are tricky words, so a whole word approach works well.
