In week 1 of my Core Word Programme, we are learning “I want” - a fundamental phrase allowing for autonomy and expression. In this session, your learners will explore “I want” through a variety of activities. Read on to see what we cover, and how I am using the programme in my classrooms.
Each session includes:
Interactive games to make learning fun
TV clips that demonstrate the core words in conversation
Makaton sign language links which help to reinforce non-verbal understanding of the core words
Sensory story suggestions
The book I have chosen for my classroom is Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, an interactive classic that I have found to be a hit with the children in my care.
In this session we also take a look at useful phrases such as “I do not want”, “I want that” and more, empowering your learners with accessible and effective tools for communication.
This is the start of a year-long core word programme, designed for AAC users and Gestalt Language Processors. Sign up now to follow along with me, and join our conversation over on a private Facebook group, perfect for support, advice and collaboration. To try it out, you can get a free demo of week #1 - I want, here.
You can start this at anytime! It’s never too late!
Watch me discuss my core word programme whilst setting up handy wallets full of all the things I need to teach my core words here on my instagram account, @SensoryClass.
These wallets help me to keep everything I need together, so when I'm ready to teach the weekly core words I can just grab and go!
Lastly, Ive been using “I want…” choosing boards created with Widgit Software to allow my learners to practice "I want" communication, and making sure to model lots of examples myself during the day.
If you want to try Widgit Software for yourself, and your classroom, you can get a 28 day free trial with my link.
How do you model “I want” for your learners? I’d love to know.
