Ask Me Anything - TA Who Creates An Overstimulating Environment

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others, too.

"I have a teaching assistant who is relatively new and she is repeating everything I say after I say it. I've tried to explain “one voice at a time' and to use visuals or Makaton, but I am not seeing any change.”

I started a “silent hour” for staff every day at a given time. A chance to practice visual first communication. I noticed that even outside of this hour, it improved the adult's ability to go visual first as they could see the positive impact on the children.

Around the hour I also play “autism calming music” from YouTube whenever I’m not leading a session. This also helped out the noise levels.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions, you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
