Ask Me Anything - Struggles With Instructions

Ask Me Anything - Struggles With Instructions

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others, too.

"Hi there! I have a student with Down syndrome, and they struggle with simple instructions, things like standing and sitting. Do you have any advice for this?"

Could it be a gross motor thing? Typically, Down syndrome students are hypermobile, this leads to a lack of proprioception feedback. Try a weighted blanket/lap and deep pressure squeezes.

It could also be processing time. Allow at least 8 seconds before repeating an instruction, or even better, go visual.

Stubbornness is also very common; try a change of face and offering opportunities for control, similar to those with a PDA profile.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions, you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
