Ask Me Anything - Possessive Of Resources

Ask Me Anything - Possessive Of Resources

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others too.

"Hello! Firstly I would like to say thank you. As a newly qualified SEN teacher, your page has helped me so much and given me so many ideas. My boss purchased your sensory curriculum, which has been so helpful, too.

I wanted to pick your brains. Do you have any strategies/ideas on how best to deal with someone who is extremely possessive of resources? They claim everything as theirs and will quite often go to ruin, knock over or swipe what another child is using. The child is non-verbal, year 1 age and still working on building relationships with adults.

Any ideas you have would be much appreciated! Thank you"

Thank you for your question.

It’s often just where they are at developmentally, see the triangle of learning, image below.

Things that can help are “wait” and “my turn” visuals modelled regularly and with items they are not too fussed about at first. This Instagram video has more info.

I also model turn-taking in Attention Autism sessions. I recommend it! You can see some examples on my Attention Autism videos on social media or my Attention Autism blog posts.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions, you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
