Ask Me Anything - Low self esteem.

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others, too.

" I have a child who has ASD, very bright but struggles in mainstream. If he feels that he hasn’t done something “right” (even if that thing is subjective), he will withdraw, shut down and bang his head on the table. I’ve put provisions in place, like a cushion, and have asked for an intervention, but don’t know when that will be happening. Do you have any advice? "

Maybe you have already tried these. I would suggest:

1 - Social stories

2 - Comic strip conversations

3 - PANDA APPROACH techniques

and clear success criteria made to be easily achievable so he knows what success looks like, rather than creating an unrealistic expectation for himself. You could list it on a whiteboard and wipe them off as he achieves each one, so he knows he’s done it right.

I hope that helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions, you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
