Ask Me Anything - Copying Or Unmasking?

Ask Me Anything - Copying Or Unmasking?

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others, too.

"Can I ask you for some advice, please? How do I stop children from copying other children's behaviour in an alternative provision? Some children seem to be behaving worse now they are in there than they did before"

It may be copying, but it could also be unmasking. They are now in a safe and accepting environment where they can be their true selves. If it is copying, they are experimenting with the quickest way to communicate and receive their needs being met. Make sure you act fast for the behaviours you want to see and slower and less animated with what you don't want to see.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
