Ask Me Anything - Bucket Time Fixed Interest

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others, too.

"Hi Jordan, I wonder if you can help. For years, I have been doing Attention Autism bucket sessions with my child; I have a whole cupboard full of them! In the last few weeks, she is seeking them 100% of the time.

She pulls them out of the cupboard, but if you try to put her into a seat, she isn’t interested. Then, there is sensory overstimulation and meltdown.

She is non-verbal and doesn’t have a method of communication yet. She doesn’t seem to understand cards or symbols. We have also tried buttons.

Do you think I should hide all the buckets for a few weeks? Any ideas?"

Could you try putting all of her lessons in the buckets? She’s clearly motivated by these sessions. It probably feels safe and predictable to her. I think that’s what I’d do, have a bit of a full bucket curriculum for her 🙂

*I did a whole Duplo curriculum once for a child who sounds similar.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions, you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
