Ask Me Anything - Adaptions To Mainstream Classroom

Welcome to my "Ask Me Anything" blog post series!

I answer lots of questions on my social media channels, and it makes sense to share this information (anonymously!) in case it is useful for others too.

"Hi, I work in a mainstream school. This year, 6 of our 30 pupils have some form of SEND. What are the best adaptations we could make in a mainstream classroom? We have lots of visuals and sensory stations, but some of the children are really struggling."

Hi! You’re in the right place

At first I would suggest:

- Visual timetable, and refer to it after every lesson

- Search autism calming music on YouTube and play this in focused work or reading time, and when they enter the class

- Have a safe space they can go to get away from the light, sound, overwhelm

- Offer sensory circuits to at least this 6, but maybe the whole class?

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, let me know.

*I am not a doctor or medical professional, so for some questions you might want to contact your GP, the National Autistic Society, or the NHS.
